How does a heat pump water heater work?

An air source heat pump water heater operates like your home heat pump air conditioner, but instead of heating and cooling air, the E-Tech water heater heats (and in special situations, cools) water. A heat pump water heater is more efficient than the air conditioner because it makes use of virtually 100% of the heat absorbed, consumed and generated by the electrical consumption of the system. The integral refrigeration system captures the heat generated by the compressor motor and the refrigeration compression cycle and converts that energy to water heating as well.

Standard water heaters heat water by converting a fuel source (typically electricity or natural gas) into heat, which is then transferred into the water. This requires the purchase of all of the energy it takes to heat the water. Since no standard water heater is 100% efficient, you actually need to pay for more energy than the water heating requires to make up for the inefficiency.

E-Tech heat pump water heaters work by transferring heat, not creating heat. Heat pumps move energy from someplace it's not needed (in this case, the surrounding air) into the water. The total energy required to heat the water does not change, but you only need to purchase the energy which is needed to move the heat - typically only 20 - 50% of the total energy - saving you up to 80% of energy costs.

What are some good applications?

Applications that require large amounts of hot water and that can take advantage of the air conditioning produced by the heat pump are the best candidates for an air source heat pump. Some typical examples are

  • Commercial kitchens and laundries. They have large hot water demands and a lot of heat producing machinery. This can create an uncomfortable work environment which can benefit by spot cooling work stations, possibly reducing employee turnover.
  • Restaurants. They also have large hot water requirements and plenty of heat producing equipment. Cool air can be vented to the grill or dishwashing stations to improve employee comfort.
  • Commercial or industrial applications where the cooling can be ducted into the existing air conditioning ducts to reduce the cooling load on the system.

Cool, Dehumidified Air

When the heat pump removes energy from the surrounding air, - what happens to the air? It gets colder! The by-product of a heat pump is cool - dehumidified air. This "free" air conditioning is a natural by-product of heat pump operation. This cool air can be used to offset other space cooling loads, reducing air conditioning costs, or ducted to provide spot cooling for increased employee comfort.

WH series units should not be mistaken for air conditioners, because when there is no demand for hot water there is no air conditioning.
